Find Holistic Healing Classes in the United States and Canada. Individuals who are searching for innovative fields of study and would like to learn about holistic and alternative healthcare modalities will find that enrolling in one of numerous holistic healing classes can help them explore both ancient and novel healing arts.

Today, holistic healing classes are offered in simple learning platforms such as holistic seminars, workshops and in public community centers. As well, holistic healing classes may be more comprehensive in nature and integrated into certificate, degree and continuing education programs.

Students who desire to become holistic health practitioners can take holistic healing classes in healing alternatives, wellness and detoxification, energy medicine, mind-body-spirit medicine, and introductory Chinese herbal medicine. Others may elect to pursue holistic healing classes to become a spiritual healer. Certificate courses in this particular field of study involve studies in theology, prayer, mantra and meditation, spirituality, and other metaphysical subject matter.

Holistic healing classes in acupuncture may lead to a diploma, certificate or degree. Depending on the alternative health school in which you enroll, there are various holistic healing classes that are drawn from Oriental medicine philosophy and practices. While some holistic healing classes may be more geared toward needless techniques, such as acupressure, moxibustion, cupping and Chinese medical massage, other courses may involve more in-depth instruction in Tai Chi, Qi gong, acupuncture needling methods, TCM, herbal medicine, Chinese medical terminology and more.

]]>

A number of holistic healing classes entail studies in holistic divinity, animal healing, shamanic journeys, reiki, nutrition and supplements, essential oils, flower remedies, herbology, hypnotherapy, iridology, among others. In addition, there are very popular holistic healing classes that are centered on massage therapy. In these courses of study, students are taught about anatomy, kinesiology, physiology, and range of motion. Massage modalities that are offered through holistic healing classes encompass training in acupressure, deep tissue massage, sports massage, Swedish massage, touch therapy, medical massage, trigger point and countless other methodologies.

If earning your associates, bachelors, masters or doctorate is important to you then there are a number of holistic healing classes that are more advanced and comprehensive in nature. These holistic healing classes typically include practical and clinical instruction in chiropractic, naturopathy, Oriental medicine, orthomolecular medicine, and anti-aging and preventive medicine. In addition, professionals who have already attained some level of medical education will find that there are holistic healing classes in holistic nursing, holistic veterinarian and holistic M.D. programs.

There are several more holistic healing classes from which one can choose: some lesser known studies may include apitherapy (Bee products’ therapy), animal therapy, bioenergetics, phytotherapy, naprapathy, Feldenkrais, Feng Shui, polarity therapy and many more.

If you (or someone you know) are interested in finding holistic healing classes, let career training within fast-growing industries like massage therapy, cosmetology, acupuncture, oriental medicine, Reiki, and others get you started! Explore career school programs near you.

Tuning Into Opposites for Health

Tuning Into Opposites for Health:
The Principle of Yin and Yang for Medicine

Chinese medicine is not only a way of science that incorporates the discoveries made for holistic health. It also incorporates philosophies that are important for one to be able to stay in the best health. Along with these philosophies are practical principles that are applied with Chinese medicine in order for holistic health to be achieved.

The idea of Yin and Yang is one of the many principles that are at the root of Chinese medicine and it’s functioning. This particular method was applied through Taoism, one of the religious practices in the Orient. From this philosophy, the Chinese discovered that the laws of the universe could be applied to each individual in order to gain optimum health.

The idea of Yin and Yang incorporates five major ideas that are then used in order to help one gain the best of health. The first of these is opposition. This means that everything and everyone has two polar opposites. When one is balanced, both of these are controlling each other. This opposition is essential to one being able to exist in the universe.

Not only is this opposition essential for existence, but it is also what allows one to be healthy. By balancing out these two opposites, one is able to nourish them as well as grow into new understanding and balance. However, even if these are not balanced, there is still a little of one side into the other making the idea of Yin and Yang interchangeable.

When one applies these particular philosophies to health, they can find that they are able to use the principles to help with health. With each side of your body is another side that is the polar opposite. A good example is your abdomen, which needs your back in order to remain balanced. By focusing on both sides, you will be able to gain balance, energy and a holistic approach to your life.

The idea of Chinese medicine is one that doesn’t just record symptoms through a scientific perspective. It takes into account the dark and light sides of everyone. By learning how to apply the principles of Yin and Yang to every part of your health, there is the ability to learn to exist with a new balance.

Back to the Plants

Back to the Plants:
Chinese Medicine and Herbal Remedies

In Chinese medicine everything has a place and a structure in order to help with healing. All of these are natural approaches to bringing holistic health in an individual. One of the concepts that Chinese medicine uses in relation to this is herbal remedies. By combining a variety of elements, there is the ability for the herbs to help in healing everything.

The basis behind herbal remedies is to combine a series of herbs in order to bring about the desired effect. Usually, there will be a formula of four herbs used in combination with each other. This is done in order to treat secondary illnesses that may have been affected by the primary illness. It also helps to balance and strengthen the body while it is healing.

When Chinese medicine begins to divide the various herbal remedies, they will do so by a hierarchy. At the top of this hierarchy is the emperor herb. This will be used to cure the major illness that is taking place. Underneath this is the ?ministers’ of the herbal remedy. This is used to treat any secondary illnesses that are taking place. After this, herbal ?assistants’ will be used to support the other two herbs. The last set of herbs will be the messenger herbs, which will tell the primary and secondary herbs where to go and how much of an effect to take on the body.

The herbal remedies that are placed together after this will be divided by the specific symptoms that are being seen. Like all other parts of Chinese medicine, these will first be found through the five elements and how they relate to the body. For example, some herbs will be spicy in order to relate to areas of the body that need this extra element to begin better flow of Qi.

The last part of herbal medicine from ancient Chinese remedies is to determine the type of energy that is needed by a person. This is found by diagnosis and examining the Qi that is in a person. After this, a specific mixture of these four hierarchies will be mixed together in order to help change the energy flow that is in someone.

By examining the Qi and finding respective remedies through herbs, one is able to find the best solutions using a holistic method. This allows one to benefit from the use of Chinese medicine and herbs in order to fight off an illness or block of energy in their system.

Learning to Balance Energy

Learning to Balance Energy:
The Practice of QiGong in Chinese Medicine

The use of meditation as a form of healing is one of the most important concepts used in Chinese medicine. From ancient practices, it is believed that meditation links one to their energy, allowing them to remain clear and with a better energy flow. The energy flow of Qi is the one that enables one to have the energy that they need on all levels, leading to a practice of Qigong, which helps one to focus their energy on what is needed.

Qigong is one of the most popular medical meditation practices used for Chinese medicine. From its origins, it has been known to be not only a meditation, but also a self-medicating practice by moving the flow of energy, or Qi. When one practices Qigong, they will focus on specific focal points of the body. This allows them to clear these points and continue to stay balanced, energized and healthy.

Qigong is best known for combining its ideas of meditation, breathing and movement. This begins with a series of breathing exercises that are used in order to begin the flow of energy. This is then combined with exercises that allow the muscles to become tense and relax. These exercises are known to help the muscles to become heated, which in turn, allows for an increase in producing energy and digesting nutrients that are needed throughout the body.

When one is beginning Qigong, there will be a focus on deep breathing as well as meditation of visualizations and clearing of the mind. This purpose is to begin creating a discipline in the rhythms in one’s body. The idea is that this will then begin to reflect the rhythms of life that is surrounding a person. The result will be an elimination of tension of nerves, irregularities and dysfunctions in the body. The long term result of this will be strengthening and balance of the body.

The main purpose behind Qigong is to active channels of energy that are in every person. This is a holistic practice to healing that everyone has the ability to practice, either as a meditation or a way to develop a strengthening of the entire system. The combination of meditation techniques with movement allows one to become in sync to the rhythm of their own body and life, giving them a holistic and balanced way to living.

Towards a Well Balanced Lifestyle

Towards a Well-Rounded Lifestyle:
Defining Chinese Medicine

If you were ever asked about what Chinese medicine was, you could think of a variety of definitions, ideas and concepts that are used in the practice. Chinese medicine is not limited to a specific set of rules or processes that are used in healing and helping one with their ailments. However, there are specific concepts that are used with the practice of Chinese medicine that can be applied in any area.

Since the beginning of Chinese medicine, there has been an expansion into a variety of methods and ideologies that help to enhance one’s well being. Overall, Chinese medicine is an approach to a holistic lifestyle. This means that with the practice of Chinese medicine is also the unification of the physical with the mental and spiritual. When one has unified all three of these aspects, they are healthy.

Not only does Chinese medicine approach health through holistic methods, it also uses ideas of natural law in order to enhance the experience of this type of medicine. All of the laws that are in the universe are inversely related to one’s body. In this practice, they are considered to be a reflection of each other. Whether you are looking into acupuncture or Qigong as a practice, you can expect that natural laws will be at the basis of understanding how your body works.

After there is an understanding of natural laws as well as the holistic lifestyle, Chinese medicine will move into approaches towards energy. This is one of the major universal laws that are applied at all levels of Chinese medicine. Through any practice of Chinese medicine, it is also said that there are specific energies that are linked. The idea behind Chinese medicine is to find a way to unite the energies and to keep them flowing in a way that is complete and natural.

The idea of Chinese medicine is to create a lifestyle that is balanced and flows with the proper type of energy. No matter what area or aspect of Chinese medicine you are looking into, you can expect to see the practice with these foundational ideals. The goal of this is to allow one to move into a lifestyle that enhances all areas of living.

Connecting To Your Breath

Connecting To Your Breath:
Chinese Medicine as Meditation

The holistic approach to medicine doesn’t just include sticking needles in your system or taking an extra set of herbs every day. It also consists of finding an approach to your life that will lead to a well rounded well being. If you are working towards healing, gaining energy or just feeling better about your every day life, than approaching Chinese medication is a great way to begin approaching your life differently.

Along with the diagnosis and assessments of your physical body, is the connection to the mind and spirit within Chinese medicine. Because this is an important concept in Chinese medication, meditation will often be used as a basis for many of the practices. This is especially seen in practices such as Qigong and Yoga, where meditation combines with physical movement in order to open the energy centers of the body.

If you are working towards achieving balance in your physical life, then you will want to begin by opening the body centers through meditation. Even though this is often considered a mental and spiritual practice, it will also affect you physically. The idea of breath in any Chinese medicine is important, as it clears several of your centers. This is one of the elements that are never ignored in Chinese medicine.

Not only will your breath begin to clear your body centers, but it is also proven that the meditation methods will help to improve other areas of your body. Scientific research has begun to study meditation and how its applications can directly affect your well being. When you breathe deeply, the extra oxygen will cleanse your system and will also move into areas of your body that need the extra oxygen. It will also begin to affect your nervous system by stimulating chemicals in your body. Over time, the meditation practices can detoxify your entire system, helping you to be more energized in your daily life.

If you are looking into the practices of Chinese medicine, you will also want to consider meditation. This practice can’t be separated from Chinese medicine or holistic health. By approaching the mental and spiritual aspects of the medicine, as well as the physical, you will be able to enjoy a well-rounded approach towards the ancient medical practice.

Simple Steps For Developing A Holistic Treatment For Depression

Simple Steps For Developing A Holistic Treatment For Depression

Simple Steps For Developing A Holistic Treatment For Depression

Holistic medicine is defined as a form of therapy aimed at treating the whole person, not just the part or parts in which the symptoms occur. Finding a holistic treatment for depression involves formulating a treatment plan to rule out underlying causes, make lifestyle changes, correct any nutritional deficiencies, implementing exercise and avoid inactivity , and possibly consider a natural herbal remedy.

Depression is quite often caused by an underlying cause. This is an important first step in creating a holistic treatment plan for depression. If there is an underlying cause such as hormones, thyroid problems, or stress related adrenal problems if will greatly impact the effectiveness of any treatment whether conventional or alternative.

Smart lifestyle choices are very important in establishing a holistic treatment for depression. There are a number of lifestyle choices which have been linked to depression including smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and caffeine intake. Eliminating one or all of these can be a difficult task due to their addictive nature but keep in mind that any addictive substance changes brain chemistry and some experts believe the key to overcoming depression is in rebalancing brain neurotransmitter chemistry. If a substance or substances are standing in the way of this pursuit changes are positive long lasting results will be hard achieve.

Research shows that a deficiency in only one nutrient can change brain function in a way that it brings on bouts of depression. In establishing a holistic treatment for depression taking a daily multivitamin is a good place to start. Studies show that depressed people tend to have low levels of folic acid, vitamin B12, and vitamin B6 so a B complex supplement should not be ruled out as well.

Sometimes when exercise is mentioned people just roll their eyes because they have heard it so many times. Nevertheless, exercise should be the cornerstone which your holistic depression treatment program is built upon. Numerous studies have clearly indicated that exercise has profound anti-depressive effects. These studies show that increased participation in exercise, sports, and physical activities is strongly associated with decreased symptoms of anxiety and depression. Additionally, people who establish consist exercise programs have higher self esteem, feel better, and are in general much happier than those that do not. One of the best pieces of advice anyone can give you in establishing a sustainable exercise program is to start slow and make it fun. Examples would be taking a walk in a scenic natural park, listening to music, or finding a friend to converse with while walking. If you turn exercise into something you have to do rather than something you want to do you will not stick with it.

Natural remedies for depression are not essential for establishing a holistic treatment for depression program. Nevertheless, they might be that last piece of the puzzle that helps you succeed. Perhaps the most popular natural remedies for depression are herbal blends. Herbal blends for depression often contain the popular herb St. John’s wort in combination with other herbs such as passionflower. Some studies suggest that when combined with a holistic treatment plan for depression as described above the benefits can rival those of anti-depressant medications without the side effects.

In closing, if you are suffering with depression perhaps the most important thing is not to let depression get in the way of seeking help. It is easy to put off taking action believing things will get better, they may not. Don’t let yourself fall into this depressive cycle. Take action now.

Holistic Health Care News: The Importance of Healthy Sunscreen

Did you know that a recent consumer safety study showed that 4 out of 5 sunscreens on the market contains harmful chemicals? And that up to 70% of sunscreens contained questionable or misleading claims on the bottle? What if the very sunscreen you are putting on your body to protect yourself from cancer contains carcinogenic compounds?

Why Naturopathic Doctors Believe Healthy Skin Care Affects Holistic Medicine

The skin is the largest organ of the human body. The skin not only protects the muscles, ligaments, organs and bones, but also guards the rest of the body from microorganisms, eliminates toxins, insulates the body, regulates temperature, and synthesizes Vitamin D. In order to maintain good health, proper skin care is essential since the health of the skin reflects the health of the body.

Sunshine can be very healthy for our skin, as well as our mood.  But what about the dangers that comes along with too much sunshine?  Sunburn, skin cancer, wrinkles, premature aging…we’ve all been taught to protect our skin from the harsh rays of the sun or else suffer the consequences.  So for the past years, many of us have heeded these warning and have been lathering up, head to toe, with minimum SPF 970 sunscreen to stay safe from the dangers lurking from above.

Avoid Common Allergies and Symptoms of Toxicity with Natural and Organic Skin Care

In today’s modern world many people suffer from sensitivities to the harsh chemicals and preservatives found in lotions, make up, cleansers and other skin care products. Common allergies and symptoms of skin toxicity include acne, excessive dryness, rosascea, rashes, itchiness and more.  These kinds of skin problems can be treated with herbal medicine, homeopathy and a body detox program. Naturopathic medical physicians and alternative health practitioners also recommend the use of chemical-free, organic skin care products.

A Naturopathic Doctor’s Opinion on the Importance of Wearing Healthy Sunscreen

The Environmental Working Group (www.EWG.org), the same excellent organization responsible for researching and publishing resources such as The Shopper’s Guide to Organic Produce, has now created The Shopper’s Guide to Sunscreen. EWG has carefully studied more then 1100 sunscreens currently on the market and evaluated the products based on three major criteria:

1. How much protection the sunscreen offers against UVA and UVB rays

2. How quickly the sunscreen breaks down

3. How many toxic ingredients or harsh chemicals it contains.

According to EWG’s study, featured on www.cosmeticdatabase.com, four out of five sunscreens on the market fail to properly protect the skin or contain harmful chemicals. Popular brands such as Banana Boat and Coppertone received poor ratings from EWG, as did brands like Almay and Neutrogena, which are advertised specifically for people with sensitive skin.

Most sunscreens fail to achieve high ratings from EWG for the following reasons:

1. The sunscreen does not provide UVA and UVB protection.  (The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) is designed to measure UVB protection only).

2. The sunscreen breaks down too quickly and skin is not protected.

3. The sunscreen contains harsh chemicals that are absorbed into the blood and can lead to other health problems.

Naturopathic doctors and alternative health practitioners are concerned about problems with popular sunscreens because they do not do what they are supposed to: protect the skin from damage or aging.

UVA and UVB Rays

UVB rays, the ones that are considered for an SPF rating, are dangerous because they are absorbed by the superficial layer of skin and can cause sunburn and potentially skin cancer. UVA rays, the ones not considered for SPF, affect the deeper layers of skin but can also cause skin aging and skin cancer.  According to the EWG, 7% of sunscreens do not prevent UVA.

Rapid Breakdown and Limited Coverage

Additionally, 44% of analyzed sunscreens experience partial or total breakdown within minutes or hours, which means although the sunscreen offers some protection, the protection is not guaranteed over time.

Naturopathic Medicine Concerns About Sunscreen Chemicals

Naturopathic doctors and other professionals in the holistic health care field have many safety concerns in particular about the chemicals used in sunscreen. Some common ingredients have been linked to hormone disruption and the onset of allergic reactions. In addition there are no safety studies that evaluate the interaction of these chemicals and their effects when combined with many other chemicals we are exposed to in our environment like pesticides, herbicides and plastics.

Questionable Product Claims about Sunscreens

Due to the possible side effects of chemicals it is important to be aware of questionable product claims regarding sunscreen.  FDA regulations currently are not complete, therefore there is no oversight about common claims.  Statements like “All Day Protection,” “Broad Spectrum Protection,” “Waterproof,” “All Natural,” and “Chemical Free” must be carefully investigated.  According to EWG, 70% of the sunscreens studied contained a questionable or misleading claim on the bottle!

If your Health Coach is not testing your “Body Terrain”, and is trying hit-and-miss approaches (like vitamins, minerals, and supplements) to help you achieve optimal health and wellness with few results, perhaps you should reassess what you want from your care giver.

Much of modern thought is geared to seeing the individual as a series of separate systems which function independently of each other. We have specialists for skin, kidneys, nervous system, bones, heart and so on.

Food companies produce whole ranges of veterinary -only diets, each food designed to treat or manage a specific health problem. Diets are developed containing supplements to promote healthy joints or immune systems, clean teeth, avoid hairball and so on.

At any time there are many thousands of biochemical and physiological reactions occurring in the body. These reactions are co-ordinated and controlled in ways which have evolved over millions of years and which we can barely begin to understand. Any effort to influence these reactions is crude and limited compared to the body’s own capabilities.

The objective of Holistic Medicine is to follow a lifestyle which provides the conditions for the body to maintain a healthy, stable condition.

By far the most important element and the one over which we have most control is the daily diet

“We don’t know what causes the problem, we don’t know how to cure it but we can use drugs to relieve it until we really understand how to deal properly with the problem.”

(John Burns BVMS MRCVS, I972)

“Shortly after qualifying as a veterinary surgeon I heard myself saying these words on numerous occasions to owners of dogs with skin problems. I was beginning to realise I was not as well prepared to deal with health problems as I would have liked. While drugs are useful for treating acute illnesses and relieving the signs and symptoms of chronic disease there are few if any chronic diseases which can be cured by drugs.

“A few years later, having read some impressive reports about acupuncture I decided to become an acupuncturist. The two-year course on Traditional Oriental Medicine attempted to unite ancient principles of health to our Western way of life. During this time I came to realise that acupuncture suffered from the same important shortcoming as modern medicine – the illness itself was being treated but the management did not address the cause of the problem.

“At the same time I became a student of the Macrobiotic movement which was in great vogue in Britain in the seventies but which has now disappeared from view (in the UK at least). Macrobiotics attempted to apply and adapt ancient, traditional philosophy in a way which was practical and appropriate to our modern lifestyle

“Although much maligned at the time Macrobiotics seemed to me to complement my scientific training although in some respects it presented an opposing view. In particular Macrobiotics, like many other branches of complementary medicine taught that most illnesses originate in the main from improper lifestyle especially the daily diet.

“By extension it follows from this that correct diet can be used to treat many illnesses or, more accurately, correct diet can allow the body to make the necessary adjustments in order to heal itself

“By experimenting on my own diet I was able to verify the principle that physical health and mental well-being can be changed by diet. I decided to adapt and apply similar principles to the understanding and practice of Veterinary Medicine.

“I advised my clients to avoid all commercial pet foods and to feed only home prepared diets based on brown rice, good quality meat (chicken, fish or lamb) and vegetables. The results were remarkable in that many chronic health problems could be managed by a simple diet. But most pet owners found the task of food preparation too impractical and could not keep it up long-term.

” I eventually came to realise that for the majority of pets, a Holistic diet can only be possible if a suitable prepared food is commercially available. That is why I came to develop my own complete foods for dogs and cats”

Raw Feeding of Dogs – Barf

The BARF (“Bones and Raw Food” or “Biologically Appropriate Raw Food”) diet is a system of holistic nutrition which is championed by Dr Ian Billinghurst who is an Australian vet. Dr. Billinghurst has published several books on health and nutrition. The best known of these is called “Give Your Dog a Bone”. The BARF Evolutionary philosophy is at first glance an attractive one; it seems to be truly natural because it tries to emulate the lifestyle of the dog in the wild.

But, after due consideration I am of the opinion that the BARF theory, like the emperor’s new clothes, does not stand up to critical inspection.

Holistic Fibroid Treatment

Edit Article |

]]>

Holistic fibroid treatment is based around the belief that disease or conditions within the body are caused by internal imbalances and that illness simply cannot exist within a perfectly healthy body. Holistic medicine sees the body as a unified whole and the perception is that everything you take into the body (food, chemicals, attitudes and beliefs) will have some effect on it, either positive or negative.

Holistic fibroid treatment avoids the use of invasive treatments, such as surgery, and the use of hormonal drug or chemical treatment but rather aims to build a strong immune system and enhancing mental strength. In addition, it aims to rid the body of any toxins or chemicals which have accumulated in the organs as it is believed that these can contribute to fibroid growth.

Holistic practitioners believe that fibroids grow in response to a number of factors, including inadequate nutrition, excessive toxicity, inadequate exercise and stress and that it is a combination of both primary and secondary factors which are responsible. Indeed, this is not out of sync with the thinking by many conventional practitioners, but the difference is the approach in dealing with fibroids.

Conventional medicine deals with the symptoms of the condition, but this means that it does not eliminate the root cause. This means that even though the fibroids many be removed, they are very likely to regrow as the causal factors are still present.

Proponents of holistic fibroid treatment believe that once internal toxins are removed from the body and a proper diet is restored, this, along with adequate exercise and stress level techniques will help to shrink fibroids and prevent the formation of further growths.

There is much evidence to suggest that women who are prepared to take charge of their own treatment and follow a comprehensive program which includes dietary and lifestyle adjustments, stress management techniques and an exercise plan can have amazing success in managing both the symptoms of their fibroids and achieving measurable shrinkage.

About the Author:

Gail advocates using natural treatments for fibroids rather than using conventional medication or surgery as this is a workable long term solution.  Conventional medication only treats the symptoms and fibroids are likely to regrow, whereas natural treatments, when used properly can eliminate the root cause by rebalancing the body and restoring overall health.
