Back to the Plants:
Chinese Medicine and Herbal Remedies

In Chinese medicine everything has a place and a structure in order to help with healing. All of these are natural approaches to bringing holistic health in an individual. One of the concepts that Chinese medicine uses in relation to this is herbal remedies. By combining a variety of elements, there is the ability for the herbs to help in healing everything.

The basis behind herbal remedies is to combine a series of herbs in order to bring about the desired effect. Usually, there will be a formula of four herbs used in combination with each other. This is done in order to treat secondary illnesses that may have been affected by the primary illness. It also helps to balance and strengthen the body while it is healing.

When Chinese medicine begins to divide the various herbal remedies, they will do so by a hierarchy. At the top of this hierarchy is the emperor herb. This will be used to cure the major illness that is taking place. Underneath this is the ?ministers’ of the herbal remedy. This is used to treat any secondary illnesses that are taking place. After this, herbal ?assistants’ will be used to support the other two herbs. The last set of herbs will be the messenger herbs, which will tell the primary and secondary herbs where to go and how much of an effect to take on the body.

The herbal remedies that are placed together after this will be divided by the specific symptoms that are being seen. Like all other parts of Chinese medicine, these will first be found through the five elements and how they relate to the body. For example, some herbs will be spicy in order to relate to areas of the body that need this extra element to begin better flow of Qi.

The last part of herbal medicine from ancient Chinese remedies is to determine the type of energy that is needed by a person. This is found by diagnosis and examining the Qi that is in a person. After this, a specific mixture of these four hierarchies will be mixed together in order to help change the energy flow that is in someone.

By examining the Qi and finding respective remedies through herbs, one is able to find the best solutions using a holistic method. This allows one to benefit from the use of Chinese medicine and herbs in order to fight off an illness or block of energy in their system.

Connecting To Your Breath

Connecting To Your Breath:
Chinese Medicine as Meditation

The holistic approach to medicine doesn’t just include sticking needles in your system or taking an extra set of herbs every day. It also consists of finding an approach to your life that will lead to a well rounded well being. If you are working towards healing, gaining energy or just feeling better about your every day life, than approaching Chinese medication is a great way to begin approaching your life differently.

Along with the diagnosis and assessments of your physical body, is the connection to the mind and spirit within Chinese medicine. Because this is an important concept in Chinese medication, meditation will often be used as a basis for many of the practices. This is especially seen in practices such as Qigong and Yoga, where meditation combines with physical movement in order to open the energy centers of the body.

If you are working towards achieving balance in your physical life, then you will want to begin by opening the body centers through meditation. Even though this is often considered a mental and spiritual practice, it will also affect you physically. The idea of breath in any Chinese medicine is important, as it clears several of your centers. This is one of the elements that are never ignored in Chinese medicine.

Not only will your breath begin to clear your body centers, but it is also proven that the meditation methods will help to improve other areas of your body. Scientific research has begun to study meditation and how its applications can directly affect your well being. When you breathe deeply, the extra oxygen will cleanse your system and will also move into areas of your body that need the extra oxygen. It will also begin to affect your nervous system by stimulating chemicals in your body. Over time, the meditation practices can detoxify your entire system, helping you to be more energized in your daily life.

If you are looking into the practices of Chinese medicine, you will also want to consider meditation. This practice can’t be separated from Chinese medicine or holistic health. By approaching the mental and spiritual aspects of the medicine, as well as the physical, you will be able to enjoy a well-rounded approach towards the ancient medical practice.

Choose Natural and Safe Treatment for Molluscum

Choose Natural and Safe Treatment for Molluscum

Choose Natural and Safe Treatment for Molluscum

Most molluscum contagiosum will clear up naturally within two years. Unlike HSV, which can remain inactive in the body for months or years before reappearing, molluscum contagiosum does not remain in the body when the growths are gone from the skin and will not reappear on their own. However, there is no permanent immunity to the virus, and it is possible to become infected again upon exposure to an infected person. As long as the skin growths are present, there is a possibility of transmitting the infection to another person. When the growths are gone, the possibility for spreading the infection is ended. There are a few treatment options that can be done at home.

Povidone-iodine surgical scrub can be gently scrubbed on the infected area for 5 minutes daily until the lesions resolve. However, the ability of iodine to penetrate intact skin is poor; without a pin prick into each molluscum lesion, this method does not work well. Do not use on broken skin. For mild cases, over-the-counter wart medicines, such as salicylic acid may or may not shorten infection duration. Daily topical application of tretinoin cream also trigger resolution. These treatments require several months for the infection to clear, and are often associated with intense inflammation and possibly discomfort.

Occasionally, doctors prescribe imiquimod and the optimum schedule for its use has yet to be established. Imiquimod is a form of immunotherapy. Immunotherapy triggers your immune system to fight the virus causing the skin growth. Imiquimod is applied three times per week, left on the skin for six to ten hours, and washed off. A cure may last from four to sixteen weeks. Small studies have indicated that it is successful about eighty percent of the time. In addition, application of duct tape over lesions until they begin to crust over and heal is well tolerated, has been effective, and can be implemented at home with readily available materials.

Tape is cut to the size of lesions and applied after washing or when previously applied tape falls off. This treatment for molluscum was motivated by success with treating warts similarly. The conclusions of a controlled study were that duct tape therapy was significantly more effective than cryotherapy for treatment of the common wart. Surgical treatments include cryosurgery, in which liquid nitrogen is used to freeze and destroy lesions, as well as scraping them off with a curette. Application of liquid nitrogen may cause burning or stinging at the treated site, which may persist for a few minutes after the treatment.

Scarring or loss of color can complicate both these treatments. With liquid nitrogen, a blister may form at the treatment site, but it will slough off in two to four weeks. Although its use is banned by the FDA in the United States in its pure, undiluted form, the topical blistering agent cantharidin can be effective. It should be noted that cryosurgery and curette scraping are not painless procedures. They may also leave scars or permanent white marks. It is important to remember that removal of the visible bumps does not cure the disease. The virus is in the skin and new bumps often appear over the course of a year until the body mounts an effective immune response to the virus.

Natural medicine for molluscum contagiosum can be said to exist with the existence of human society, which was the main therapeutic agent of human diseases before the 18th century. With the rapid development of modern medicine and chemical pharmaceutical industry in the 19th century, natural medicine gradually lost people’s attention to shrink and this situation was more serious in the western world. Modern chemical drugs for molluscum contagiosum have poor efficacy or side effects and drug resistance of some drugs become more and more serious. Under these circumstances, people begin to train their eyes to natural medicine.

The World Health Organization emphasized for the first time that traditional medicine had made a great contribution to human health and appealed its member states to attach importance to it in the Resolution 72 passed in the 29th World Health Assembly held in 1976. This undoubtedly played a role in fueling the development of natural medicine. In subsequent meetings and relevant professional meetings, it was repeatedly emphasized that we should develop and apply traditional medicine and strengthen the research of management and security of traditional medicine. Natural Medicine For The Athlete: Heal Sports Injuries Faster With Essential Oils

Interested in speeding healing from hard workouts, and even more importantly, from injuries both acute and chronic? Many athletes pass bottles back and forth filled with crazy smelling concoctions from Chinese herbalists (and other sources) perhaps not knowing that some key ingredients are essential oils. Yes, the same essential oils used in aromatherapy have been used by hard-core athletes successfully to heal faster, and get back into their training program. Here’s a look at the most effective oils, and how to mix and apply them yourself to get the results you’re looking for.

A quick look at why essential oils work might convince you to at least give them a try. The physiologic aspects of injury are very similar, whether it be tendonitis, a tweaked ankle, a jammed wrist, or even an impact injury. You’ll find inflammation and oxidative radicals around the site. Inflammation may be the body’s way of actually protecting the area, but in the long run it slows the healing process. The oxidative radicals just happen to be associated with tissue damage — and your body needs to mop these up. Well, there’s a growing body of evidence noting the efficacy of essential oils managing these two processes: reducing the inflammatory response and moping up free radicals. On top of that, certain ketones found in very specific essential oils are known to stimulate tissue regeneration. Put all these actions together and you’ll have something that really might speed healing of your injuries.

Essential oils are really easy to use. You won’t be inhaling them — you’ll just be massaging them in. In most cases, they’re mixed up into a massage formula, though these formulas are generally stronger than what you’d be getting a full-body massage with. They’re made for spot treatments. Because essential oils pass through cell walls so quickly, they’re very readily absorbed. This is one of the things that makes them so effective, but also makes them leave the body fairly quickly as well — meaning you’ll want to apply them a few times a day for best results. Also, your essential oils, the “active ingredients” will be based in a common plain massage oil base like Almond oil for chronic injury care; in some rare cases you’ll use the essential oils undiluted.

Certain essential oils CAN be used at 100% strength (also called “neat” application”) in certain cases. When an injury has just happened, say out on the playing field, then “neat” application can dramatically reduce the swelling that can occur. This initial swelling is why some athletes will apply ice to an area immediately — it can have a big impact on how quickly the injury heals in the long run. One leading medical aromatherapist notes that the initial hematoma can be severely reduced or almost entirely prevented from appearing altogether.

The single most important oil for the athlete is Helichrysum essential oil. It manages to do everything at once: stop inflammation, clean up oxidation, reduce pain, and actually stimulate tissue regeneration with its unique chemical profile. If you were to only try one single oil for healing, this would be the one. It’s not inexpensive, but as an athlete, knowing what a drag it is not getting to do your thing, its price looks much more attractive. This is the primary oil called for where those injuries have just happened — using it at full strength in these cases — as well as for chronic injuries, where you’ll dilute it to 10 or 20 percent in a seed or nut oil before applying. But to really speed the healing processes, Helichrysum can be blended with other oils that perform similar functions, but in slightly different ways.

The first root oil well look at is Plai (yes, we pronounce it “play”, and no one has corrected us yet!). Plai has been studied as both an anti-inflammatory and an analgesic, with very positive results. It is also an antioxidant — so you can see, except for the specific tissue regeneration component, its right up there with Helichrysum. Some users are also applying this oil at 100% strength in acute cases; otherwise its most commonly used at 10% strength based in a carrier oil. Plai is frequently combined with other essential oils in the formula to enhance its efficacy.

Two more oils are at the forefront of sports injury treatment: Ginger and German Chamomile. Both these oils can be found as carbon dioxide extracts (CO2′s), and this cold process will make the most potent anti-inflammatory oils for healing purposes. If one had to be chosen, Ginger would be it, if only due to the significant body of research noting its potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. At the same time, they likely work together producing a synergistic healing action.

Creating a formula for chronic injuries is very easy to do, and you’ll likely be thrilled with the results. The following formula will be most effective for soft-tissue injuries, though injuries involving cartilage will benefit as well — just at a slower pace (as is the nature of such injuries!). Use ten percent Helichrysum OR Plai essential oil, and two percent of each of the others, based in ANY carrier oil — Almond, Hazelnut, even Olive will work. Mix this up in a clean glass container — a one or two ounce amber or cobalt blue bottle with an eye dropper can be the easiest to dispense the oils from in the long run.

All the essential oils mentioned here have a track record for healing and inflammation reduction of soft tissue injuries. Many people find them far more effective than any pharmaceutical preparation they’ve ever tried. If you find yourself frequently nursing an injury incurred from sports, its really worth the effort to mix up one of these blends at least once and give it a whirl. Like so many users, you’ll probably be pleasantly surprised with the results.

Amino Acids are one of essential acids our body requires in order survive. Put simply, they help make up the proteins which are essential for our bodies. Protein substances are vital within our bodies as they help to make up our muscles, ligaments, tendons, organs, glands, nails, hair and help our bones to grow. They also form the basis of our immune system which helps to keep us alive. In short, they are an extremely important part of our body. However, this form of protein cannot be obtained by simply eating protein rich foods. When we ingest protein, our body will break down the protein and convert this into amino acids which are then used in order to build the proteins it requires. Amino Acids are not proteins, but actually what are used to build the protein structures. For the bodybuilder, they are essential to growth, but protein is not equal to amino acids. Similar to creatine, it’s not the same to get 3g of creatine from eating meat as it is to take it as a supplement. The supplement seems to be much more potent. Amino Acids as peptides can really boost muscle growth and targeted free form amino acids can enhance metabolic effects.

Amino acids are not only vital in order to create necessary proteins, but also to aid with a variety of metabolic functions within the body. These include helping with the process which sends messages from our nerves, and allows necessary vitamins and minerals to do what they are intended for, rather than be simply absorbed by the body and disregarded. Singular amino acids can do everything from act as a brain neurotransmitter to help you sleep to increase muscle mass. For example, L-Tryptophan may help to relax a person and ease things like ADHD and OCD, while L-Tyrosine may be a precursor to dopamine and increase mental focus and acuity. Beta Alanine buffers lactic acid, causing athletes to reduce muscle soreness and prevent fatigue while Citrulline has been shown to help people’s endurance when injured or sick. Amino acids such as Carnitine may help burn fat and increase mental acuity along with increasing energy output. Amino acids are truly natures natural prescription drugs, doing controlling all sorts of bodily functions.

It is important to be aware that amino acids are found in two different types: non-essential amino acids which are produced in the liver and account for around 80% of all the amino acids our bodies require; and essential amino acids which cannot be made within the body and so must be taken into the body via our diet. However, the need for amino acids within our body is great and in the event that you produce an insufficient supply of just one of the many amino acids within the body, you could experience some severe issues regarding your health such as stunted growth and depression. The causes for the decrease in amino acids within the body can stem from a number of factors. Dieting can lead to a lack of essential amino acids as we deprive ourselves of certain foods in a bid to lose weight. Those who follow a vegetarian or even a vegan diet are most vulnerable to facing issues as a result of a lack of amino acids. However, other, more faultless issues can cause this issue such as stress; trauma and age are all major factors.

However, in the event that you experience issues with your intake of amino acids, there is the added benefit of amino acid supplements. These supplements work by counteracting the deficiency within the body and help eliminate the issue of needing to ingest a large amount of protein through your diet, which can be extremely unhealthy. Amino acid supplements come in two forms- D form and L form. Proteins which can be found within animal and plant tissues are within the L-form and are most compatible with human biochemistry and so it is often best to begin taking these supplements. When replacing your lost amino acids with supplements, it is advantageous to take a balanced combination of both essential and non-essential amino acids in the form of a multi nutrient supplement. This way you can be sure that the dose of the acids is safe and at a level which will provide you with some benefit. In some cases, individuals may require to take only a single amino acid supplement in order to treat some form of disorder. In this case, it is imperative to not take this supplement for longer than stated by your Doctor and a single amino acid treatment must only be followed after a deficiency has been diagnosed previously.

An amino acid deficiency can cause a multitude of health issues, but with the use of amino acid supplements, this is no longer an issue. Just as those with heart problems can easily follow a planned diet to help with their issues; those who suffer from amino acid deficiency can still gain the benefits their body needs in order to be healthy and strong.

Be aware, not all amino acid supplements are the same. Many unscrupulous companies sell protein and label them as amino acids. Hydrolyzed proteins are better because they break the amino acids into smaller fractions called peptides, but these are still not the same as singular amino acids (called free form) and don’t have the same drug like qualities. Hydrolyzed proteins are great for working out and quick recovery, but they don’t have the same metabolic effects as buying s singular amino acid at your local vitamin store. Researching the desired effect of amino acids is as easy as typing them into google. Life extension is a very good source of information on amino acid therapy and the also carry a lot of amino acid products.

Preworkout product may also contain amino acids, which makes them an available source of amino’s to build new muscle. Popular amino acids like Beta Alanine can be found in the most potent formula’s on the market. Anadraulic State GT, a leading preworkout supplement, for example has a variety of free form amino acids and hydrolyzed peptides from whey, giving it a very potent one two punch. Other formula’s like NoXplode from BSN have singular amino acids that are more targeted. Both seem to have plenty of benefit for the gym rat, but the inclusion of hydrolyzed amino acids and free form, seems to offer the best punch.

In intra-workout (supplement while working out) market two products have emerged as leaders in this arena and have slightly different ratios. Xtend from Scivation is an BCAA or branched chain amino acid powdered drink that had a 2:1:1 ratio of leucine to isoleucine to valine. Studies show that you need all three of these amino acid formula’s to get the benefit of Leucine’s anabolic effect. BC+EAA from LG Science uses a blend of 10:1:1 leucine to isoleucine to valine, giving it potentially more anabolic action. It also contains a healthy dose of hydrolyzed amino acid peptides, covering both bases and giving the bodybuilder the edge in muscle growth and repair. As stated earlier each form, free form and hydrolyzed peptides have their benefits and a mixture of the two is very interesting. Both products are similar that they have a good 2g dose of Glutamine, while Xtend also contains Citrulline Malate, which may help with endurance. Both products are really tasty and come in multiple flavors, so that part is a toss up. This represents the best of the amino acid supplements for bodybuilders and performance athletes and both are available for a very good price online.
